If your monthly Volusion charges are growing, it’s most likely due to an increase in Data Transfer. Volusion charges $7 per GB of bandwidth over your monthly limit. Although the actual cost of bandwidth is next to nothing, technically Volusion is a business and has the right to create a margin on services.
With that said, it’s important to understand how Volusion actually calculates your bandwidth charges. They use a tool called SmarterStats, which tracks not only “real” visits but also visits by bots and crawlers. Well, unfortunately on average bot and crawler visits account for around 80% of total traffic which means only 20% of traffic you’re being billed for is able to generate revenue. In addition, if you’ve enabled the Volusion CDN to speed up site load time, you’re being charged twice for the same visit. Once for the CDN to download the visit from your site and then again when the CDN serves your site to the visitors.
We understand the astronomical per GB bandwidth overage cost, calculating bots and crawlers into total visits and the double charging of bandwidth can be frustrating.
